Rio Tinto’s 2010 report on gender considerations, “Why Gender Matters”, is a resource guide on the gendered impacts of mining, including with regard to negotiations and consultations, socioeconomic and environmental impacts, the dependency of women and the poor on common property resources, resettlement and migration, and other issues. It can be used as a foundation to build and expand upon the business case for taking gender into account during decision-making and planning; it also includes guidance on inclusive engagement, communications, monitoring and reporting, and case studies.
